Watch: Shane Watson and David Wiese pull-off stunning catch
It has been said time and again that ‘catches win matches’. Well, in the case of Shane Watson and David Wiese, they didn’t win the match, but, they won a million hearts with their extraordinary effort along the long-on boundary ropes.
A Delhi Daredevils, brimming with youthful energy and exuberance faced up to the stars on show within the ranks of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. A magnificent batting effort from the usual suspects in the Challengers’ ranks saw them notch up a healthy yet gettable total of 191. The usual suspects included a whirlwind 79 from skipper Virat Kohli and yet another ‘second-fiddle’ half-century from Proteas batsman AB de Villiers.
When the Daredevils came out to bat, little did they know that Quinton de Kock was up and ready for the challenge. He seemingly took over the mantle of ‘Lord of the off-side’ from Sourav Ganguly with a Lions’ share of runs on the off side. While he smashed his way, the youthful Shreyas Iyer made a blunder early on. Perhaps it was the massiveness of the occasion or early jitters.
Despite being taken apart by de Kock in his first over, Virat Kohli showed the faith as Sreenath Aravind was given a second over. He was once again taken for runs, until the final ball of the over. A sudden rush of blood from Shreyas Iyer saw him sky the ball towards the long off fence. Initially, it seemed as though lady luck was smiling over Iyer as Kohli had brought most of his players into the circle.
Shane Watson is a Queenslander and an extremely proud one at that. He tracked towards the fence, unwilling to give up the chase. Each one of his ageing bones in his 34-year old body saw him complete an extraordinary catch. However, there was a bigger play in question. Watson tossed the ball back into the field of play. What Watson didn’t notice was mid-on fieldsman David Wiese had also made the run back. A massive dive from Wiese finally ensured that the catch was completed.
The only question, if anything was whether Wiese had touched the ropes? Even Shane Watson seemed flabbergasted that other than Wiese’s goggles, nothing else had touched the ropes.
