Watch: Shivil Kaushik's unconventional Chinaman action
Gujarat Lions fielded a young uncapped Chinaman in their playing eleven against the Rising Pune Supergiants at Pune on Friday. Prior to the game, not many knew who Shivil Kaushik was. But after having seen his action, everyone for a moment paused and tried to analyse where did that come from.
Kaushik has a very rare and unorthodox bowling action, that looks like an almost off-shoot of former South African bowler Paul Adams’ action. He runs in smoothly to the bowling crease, moves his body in the direction of the cover fielder and head towards mid-off at the onset of delivering the ball.
He is a back-of-the-hand bowler. But the most remarkable thing about it is that sometimes it comes out as a chinaman, sometimes googly and at other times just whips through as a top spinner. He himself confesses that he doesn’t know which one will turn which way.
Interestingly, even Paul Adams was thrilled to see him in action in the match against the Supergiants. The former South African chinaman tweeted that it is always good to see the Chinaman bowlers in action.
The 20-year old first shot to limelight when he cleaned up Stuart Binny in the Karnataka Premier League in his maiden season for the Hubli Tigers.
The young lad was then roped in by the Gujarat Lions for a base price of 10 Lakh at the IPL auctions earlier this year. His bowling coach at the Rajkot franchise, Heath Streak, has also heaped praise on the potential of Shivil Kaushik.
