Watch: Shreyas Iyer takes stunning catch in Deodhar Trophy
21-year-old Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer is certainly an exciting talent to look forward to. His excellent performances in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai have seen him become a strong contender for the national team selection. Iyer’s sound technique and calmness eventually saw him selected in the India B team for the Deodhar trophy.
Iyer’s batting performances however, failed to speak much for his talent. In three matches played, Iyer’s scored a poultry 55 runs, a huge understatement to a batsman who has scored almost 2000 runs in the domestic circuit.
Shreyas Iyer’s fielding performances have impressed a lot of fans and pundits alike. His fielding prowess had also been highlighted during the previous season of the Indian Premier League. Playing for the Delhi Daredevils in the 2015 edition, Iyer put up a stellar fielding performance despite the Daredevils’ poor season under JP Duminy.
The 2016 Deodhar trophy final played between India A and India B once again showcased Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant fielding and the presence of mind. Fielding at deep extra cover, Iyer’s catch along the boundary succeeded in the dismissal of left-handed batsman Sudip Chatterjee. Attempting to loft the ball over extra cover for six, Iyer pulled off a stunning catch, thus preventing a six and picking up an important wicket.
Realizing that his follow through would result in a six, Iyer’s presence of mind came to the fore as he tossed the ball, took a step beyond the boundary, came back and completed an exemplary catch. Although his side, India B lost the match by 87 runs, Iyer’s catch will be forever remembered.
