Watch: Trent Boult plays the Flamingo defence shot: It’s always entertaining to watch the tail-enders bat. While one breed of tail-enders just close their eyes and swing their bat at anything and everything, there are others who are the masters of defense, and last but not the least, the Chris Martin and Curtly Ambrose breed of tail-enders.

And it is these tail-enders who come up with some eye-popping shots. Be it Muralitharan swatting a short ball like a mosquito, or Zaheer Khan’s “all or nothing” swing. During the first Test between Australia and New Zealand at the Gabba, there was another addition to the list of “what in the world did I just see” type of shots.

New Zealand were down and out chasing a target of 504, with the and the no. 11 was out batting. While not much was expected from the final pair of Mark Craig and Trent Boult, they did manage to prolong New Zealand’s innings. And that’s when Trent Boult took the limelight.

Boult had a miserable match at the Gabba with the ball but did manage to hog some attention with a peculiar shot. Mitchell Starc, coming around the wicket, fired one way outside off stump. Boult, who could have easily left the ball, moved across to defend it on the backfoot. But additionally, he lifted his front foot, god knows why and defended it to mid wicket. The absurd position of defending it on the back foot, and at the same time, lifting his front foot, made an accurate impression of a flamingo. The commentator aptly named it “Flamingo-Back-Defense”.
