Watch: Umpire Kumar Dharmasena misses an edge and Virat Kohli has a laugh

The India vs England 3rd ODI at Kolkata was a tense game but not without some laughter. Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena has had a real tough time in the middle while making decisions. He has been trolled on social for some of the on-field calls he has made in recent times and in the recently concluded ODI Dharmasena was the on-field umpire along with Indian umpire Anil Choudhary.

One particular call that the Sri Lankan made yesterday had Indian skipper Virat Kohli in splits. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah bowled a bouncer to England all-rounder Moeen Ali in the 43rd over of England’s batting innings. Ali who has struggled against the ones banged into the wicket. Trying to deal it with an aggressive intent and attempted a pull but the ball was faster and higher than he expected and took the top edge off the side of his blade.

The ball went up and beat wicketkeeper MS Dhoni who put in a full stretch jump trying to collect the ball over his head. It was beyond his reach and once the ball beats the keeper more often than not crosses the boundary ropes; something similar happened this time. Everything sounds pretty normal until here but Dharmasena surprisingly didn’t see an edge there and called it four leg-byes.

What’s interesting here is the fact that the ball had no chance of making any contact with Ali’s body but the umpire certainly felt that. When Virat Kohli standing at first slip saw the ball pass by and turned towards the umpire to see his signal the call that Dharmasena made first surprised him and eventually couldn’t help but laugh.

The commentators had a replay of the ball telecast with the ultra edge and there was clear evidence of the ball touching the bat. The Sri Lankan probably needs some time off the game to come back fresh and avoid such mistakes which are definitely too meek for his own standards.
