New Zealand had a challenging task at hand when they were asked to chase 172 runs by Pakistan. Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson opened the innings for the Kiwis.
Comeback man Mohammad Amir started the second innings with a decent first over. Guptill took strike for the next over by left-arm spinner Imad Wasim. He rotated the strike with Kane Williamson for a single. Wasim then managed two dot balls which added pressure on the Williamson to score.
The next ball was punched to covers and Willamson quickly called for a run. However, Guptill responded little late and looked hesitant to leave the crease. This made Williamson, who was already halfway down the track stop in the middle as well. In the meantime, Guptill also left his end and stopped in the middle.
Shahid Afridi quickly collected the ball to throw at the bowler’s end. With both the batsmen in the middle of the pitch, Imad Wasim had plenty of time to complete the runout.
Williamson made a desperate attempt to sacrifice his wicket by trying to run across Guptill, but he failed as the stumps were already broken.
Guptill had previously butchered the Lankan pace attack and was a threat for the Pakistan team as well. His wicket was a priced one and the visitors would have certainly not expected to get his wicket so easily.
New Zealand looked unbeatable at home after they thrashed Sri Lanka in the recent home series. However, Pakistan broke their good run by defeating them by 16 runs in the opening game of the T20I series.
