Australian batting lineup faced the heat of South African bowling in the 2nd Test. It was Vernon Philander who was the chief wrecker for the South Africa team. Philander bagged his 10th five-wicket haul as Australia bundled out for a paltry 85 in the first innings. However, what caught the attention of most people was the on-field collision between Philander and Australian skipper Steve Smith. The incident saw Philander get injured and walk off the park for a brief while.

The incident took place in the 13th over of the match. Vernon Philander bowled the second delivery as Steve Smith tried to nudge it down to fine leg. Smith was hit on his pads. South Africans were interested in it and had a loud appeal for an lbw. Philander too was running backwards in his follow through as he appealed. Steve Smith, in the meantime, tried to scamper through for a single.

Smith encountered Philander midway through his run and unknowingly shoulder barged the South African pacer. Philander was seen hit by Smith on his back and ribs. The Proteas pacer fell down on the pitch in pain. Smith completed the run but was courteous enough to get back to Philander to check if he was fine.

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis did not look very pleased with this. He came in barging and a verbal exchange of words took place between the players. Du Plessis believed that the collision could have well been avoided. Smith could have taken a different route to complete his run. Du Plessis went on to go for the review for the appeal in the heat of the moment and tempers soared high in the middle.

Third umpire Nigel Llong found the collision nasty enough to quote, “get off his sh*t”, on the Fox Star commentary. The decision eventually went on in the favour of the Aussie skipper and he was adjudged not out. Vernon Philander looked uncomfortable and had to walk off the field. He came back to bowl in the 26th over later in the innings.
