Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli came to the rescue of his skipper MS Dhoni who had to leave the field due to the nature’s call and replaced him as the wicketkeeper during the first ODI between India and Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka last year. Kohli also took over as captain for the time being.
The incident happened during the 44th over of the Bangladesh batting innings when Dhoni was seen going off the field for an over, deputising Virat Kohli to take the glove work in his absence. Kohli did his wicket-keeping duty without the pads standing to Umesh Yadav. Dhoni soon returned to his position in the 45th over sending Kohli back to his fielding position.
Comfort breaks in cricket are quite common and cricketers are often seen going out of the field for an over or couple to relive themselves. India actually were one fielder short during that over when Virat Kohli stood behind the stumps.
The reason why MS Dhoni couldn’t bring any substitute is because MCC doesn’t allow substitutes for such reasons. Although, there is no explicit ruling on toilet breaks either by ICC or the BCCI, the MCC (Marleybone Cricket Club) law states: “A substitute fielder shall not be allowed for comfort breaks, or for when a fielder leaves the field to go to the toilet.”
The match eventually was a forgettable one for the cricket fans as Indians went on to lose the game by 79 runs.
