Watch: Waqar Younis bowls two unapologetic beamers at Andrew Symonds
Andrew Symonds’ wonderful century which laid the foundation for Pakistan’s loss defines the game. It was a brutal knock. But, the match is more remembered for his ugly face-off with Waqar Younis. The Australians were put into bat after winning the toss.
The decision proved to be right at the start after the Aussies lost Adam Gilchrist, Mathew Hayden and Damien Martyn in a short span of time. Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar looked quite dominating. Waqar Younis also opened his account with the wicket of Jimmy Maher.
However, after the early shake-up, the Australians got back on track with Andrew Symonds taking control of the proceedings in the middle. The burly right-hander had frustrated almost every bowler. Along with skipper Ricky Ponting, he took Australia to a formidable position. Crunch hits kept coming off his bat and the run rate kept soaring. This frustrated the Pakistani bowlers including skipper Waqar Younis who after getting struck for a six, bowled two unapologetic beamers at Symonds.
The first beamer was a misdirected one and posed no threat to Symonds. He didn’t pay much heed to it and chose to ignore. But, Younis looked reckless and followed it up with another beamer. This time, the ball went past Symo’s head dangerously. The right-hander had to literally throw himself out of it range to escape getting hit.
This absolutely irked the batsman who went up for a confrontation with Younis. The Pakistan skipper looked unbothered and instead exchanged some words back before umpire Davis Shepherded intervened and ruled him out of the attack. Symonds eventually finished with 143 runs off 125 balls and helped Australia post a match-winning 310/8.
