Watch: Yadav-Ashwin rattle South Africa immediately after tea break: The morning session saw Amla, followed by AB de Villers and Faf Du Plessis, conducting a “How to block:101” class with some absolutely disciplined batting. While Amla was undone by a Jadeja beauty, de Villers and Faf saw South Africa through the morning session.
The afternoon session saw du Plessis falling to Jadeja after a 97 ball resistance, following it by a duck from JP Duminy. But AB de Villers stood firm and tall in the other end, showed why he is considered as one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era. Yes, he was beaten quite a few number of times during his marathon innings, but that did not deter the mental fortress which was de Villers’ concentration. Along with him, Dane Vilas, who had a horror of a series, helped SA see through the afternoon session without any more casualties.
But the break did the trick for the Indian bowlers. The 60-odd overs old ball started to reverse prodigiously for Umesh Yadav. While de Villers was able to negotiate the swing pretty well, his partner was finding it difficult to read it. And that’s when the Vidharba pacer struck.

Umesh Yadav bowled a good length delivery wide from the stumps. Vilas, who misread the amount of reverse swing, dragged the ball down back to the stumps with his defensive shot. With just 4 wickets left, the Indians were sniffing a hard and well-earned victory. And it was Ashwin who hit the nail in the coffin for the visitors.
The ball, which barely bounced more than it was expected to throughout the entire day, just popped up when Ashwin pitched it down in the middle. De Villers, who was unable to check his shot to adjust to the extra bounce, just managed to guide it to the leg slip. Jadeja, who had marathon bowling spells today, happily poached it. And that figuratively ended SA’s resistance, who were bundled out in 4 overs after ABD’s dismissal.
