There was an overload of emotions in the stadium. The champions had lost their captain Cristiano Ronaldo just 24 minutes into the final. There were tears in the eyes of the captain who was shimmied out of the playing area on a stretcher. One of the biggest stars in the sport, the backbone of the side ruled out of the game after before the end of the first half-hour. This was not the sort of twist the Portugal fans expected.
France, who began as the favourites to win, looked stronger now. However, Portugal showed that they still had what it takes to become the champion even without Ronaldo. France was dominant but Portugal showed resistance and denied any chances to the opposition. And, as it happened, at the final whistle, the Portugal’s players piled on one another in celebration, while the French players sank to the turf in disappointment.
