Indian off-spinner Jayant Yadav was in all praise for his senior bowling partner Ravichandran Ashwin. Yadav is having a decent debut thus far. The Haryana bowler has the same skill sets as the number one ranked bowler in Tests has. No wonder why he has a lot to learn from his senior teammate. Yadav spoke about the good influence Ashwin is having on him in the team.

Jayant Yadav recalled his first interaction with Ashwin being in 2014. He disclosed that it was Eric Simons who introduced the two bowlers. Yadav recalled that Ashwin was preparing for the England tour. The best part of the meeting was the way Ashwin was humble and down to earth.

“I first got to know him in 2014 through Eric Simons. I think he was preparing for the England tour and it was very sweet of him to help me because at that time, I was just playing Ranji Trophy,” quoted Jayant Yadav after the day 3 play at Vizag. He further added that he has a great rapport with Ashwin. They both gel well as partners on the pitch. Yadav stressed the importance of being able to pick a few tricks of the trade from the modern day master.

“We have a good rapport, we have a good friendship going on. He talks a lot of sense about bowling. It is all about learning. He didn’t give a lot of technical inputs (in this match) but he told me about bowling different lines to different batsmen, be consistent all the times and where I was erring on the length. He told me a few things so that my length goes up,” said the off-spinner.

Jayant also remarked how sound Ravichandran Ashwin is technically. He rightly cited that it is not possible to master the art overnight. The way the ball is coming out of his hand is just a treat to watch, believes Jayant Yadav.

“Drift is because of the revolutions, the point of release. A lot of things fall into place for that drift to happen. Right now, Ash is bowling beautifully, like a dream. You have to work on it, it doesn’t just come overnight. You have to put a lot of effort in it and a lot of technical things also go into it,” he remarked.

Yadav was a part of the team that took on England in the warm-up match during their last tour to India in 2012. Comparing the two games, Yadav believes that playing for India gives an added sense of responsibility as against the First Class match.

“At that time, in 2012, I was playing my third or fourth first-class match, so I just went there and did my thing. Right now, I am representing India. Obviously, there is that added thing of representing India. But it’s the same I guess in a way you have to go in and do your job. You have to take wickets and score runs and take catches,” said Jayant.

Lastly, he conceded that it will not be an easy proposition to bat at the track at Vizag in the fourth innings. The off-spinner is clearly sure about an Indian win in the Test match.

“It’s going to be a tough proposition because we strive ourselves on being a consistent spin squadron. As you see, the variable bounce, the odd ball turning, the odd ball keeping straight, it is going to be really tough,” he concluded.
