Deandra Dottin, a former all-rounder for the West Indies who recently stunned many with her unexpected retirement announcement from all forms of international cricket, has joined the Adelaide Strikers for the upcoming season of the Women’s Big Bash League. Dottin announced her retirement midway through the Commonwealth Games 2022, but she continued to play the mega event as the players represented Barbados, not West Indies.
She cited the reason behind her shocking decision as problems with the team’s environment and culture, but she also mentioned that she would continue to play in different T20 leagues. Dottin has played for the Brisbane Heat and the Perth Scorchers in the past, scoring 424 runs in 29 games with her best score of 60* and taking 17 wickets.
“I am so excited to get to Adelaide and play in the WBBL again. The Strikers are a brilliant team and I hope I can help them take that extra step and bring home the title. I can’t wait to meet all the fans and put on a show for everyone with my new teammates,” Dottin was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Deandra is a match-winner who will bring big game experience: Strikers’ head coach Luke Williams
Dottin will be indulged in multiple franchise-based cricket tournaments this season. After a not-so-successful season of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, the prolific batter will be seen in the black jersey playing for the Manchester Originals Women at The Hundred– England’s unique 100-ball league. She will also be leading the Trinbago Knight Riders at the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in the tournament’s maiden season.
“Deandra is a match-winner who will bring big game experience and elite performance to Adelaide this summer. With more than 250 international appearances across T20 and ODI cricket, including multiple World Cups, as well as caps in the Hundred and WBBL, Deandra will be a fantastic addition to our squad,” said Strikers’ head coach Luke Williams.
Meanwhile, the Adelaide Strikers faced a major setback when their star pacer Sarah Coyte left the side in order to join the Melbourne Renegades. One of the finest bowlers in the death overs and the captain’s go-to person, Coyte wished to try out something new and wanted to take up a new challenge, which was also the reason behind her exit from the Strikers.
