Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have started the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) with a bang. After thrashing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first game, they won their second game in a row when they beat Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Feroz Shah Kotla. They won both games on the back of some really good bowling. RCB were shot down for a mere 70 in the first game while they restricted DC to just 147 in their 20 overs.
Ever since last year’s auction, CSK have been trolled as ‘Dad’s army’ given the age of the players. Various CSK players, including skipper MS Dhoni, have admitted to the fact. In fact, the average age of their XI in the first two games was around 34 which is the highest ever in any IPL game.
Dwayne Bravo who was one of the stars in CSK’s win over Delhi reverted back saying that the players in the CSK squad are not 60 year-olds and they still look after their bodies really well. “We are aware of our age. It’s there and you can google it but that’s nothing. We are not 60 year-olds, we are 35, 32-year-olds. We are still young, we look after our bodies and we have a lot of experience,” Bravo was quoted as saying in the post-match press conference.
I don’t think we will be a very good fielding side: Dhoni
The higher average age has meant that Chennai Super Kings don’t boast of the fittest of the players. They haven’t been at their best in the field as well. They’ve dropped a few catches and there have been small yet constant errors on the field.
However, skipper MS Dhoni has accepted the fact that he cannot expect the team to be the best fielding team. Even last year, he kept reiterating the fact that the players need to be safe and smart while fielding. He reiterated the same fact once again. In the post-match presentation last night. “I don’t think we will be a very good fielding side and that is something we have to accept. But we can certainly be a safe fielding side. We need to work on that,” Dhoni said.
