Just days before the commencement of IPL 2020, Chennai Super Kings received a huge blow as multiple members of their squad tested COVID-19 positive. It was reported that at least 10 staffers along with a player have contracted the virus.
The player to have been infected has been identified as premier pacer Deepak Chahar and as a result, the entire CSK squad has been forced to go into quarantine. CSK’s hopes of kicking off their training camp have also been shattered as they first have to serve the quarantine period. In the wake of the latest development, the BCCI has also put the schedule announcement of IPL 2020 on hold.
Amid the chaos, a two-week-old conversation between Deepak and Rahul Chahar has been doing rounds on social media. Deepak, on 14th August, had shared a picture with his CSK teammates while departing for their pre-season training camp in Chennai. Many players including MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina were a part of that camp before they boarded the flight to UAE.
Deepak’s brother Rahul, who is a part of Mumbai Indians, had commented on the picture, “Where is your mask bro? Social distancing?”
In response, Deepak had said, “All have been tested negative bro 2 times and we don’t wear mask with family.” Chahal’s reply had received many likes at that time but many people are now questioning his decision of not wearing a mask and following safety measures during their flight. Along with Deepak, other team members like Suresh Raina, Karn Sharma and Piyush Chawla were also not wearing a mask.
Youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad also tested positive for COVID-19
MS Dhoni-led CSK was the only team of the eight franchises that held a camp in India before departing to UAE. As per reports, the BCCI had expressed its concern over CSK’s decision to hold a camp considering the situation in the country and even asked the team management to cancel it.
After Chahar’s news, CSK further received two more blows. Youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad tested positive for COVID-19 and ‘Chinna Thala’ Raina had to fly back to India due to personal reasons.
Deepak has been a part of CSK squad since 2018. In two seasons with CSK so far, he has taken 32 wickets in 29 matches, playing a vital role in CSK’s journey to the final in previous year’s IPL. He had scalped 22 wickets throughout the season.
Chennai Super Kings were expected to lock horns with Mumbai Indians in the season opener on September 19th. However, considering the current situation, the BCCI will most likely look to alter the schedule.
