Indian Premier League is about to go live from September 19th. With just over a month to go for the same, all the teams are involved in preparing for the extravaganza. However, the surprise news during the preparation came when Mahendra Singh Dhoni the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain resigned from International cricket.
He did not play any international game since last one year and that when everybody was excited to finally see him in the IPL which could have set the tone for his international comeback, the news of his retirement broke out. The Chennai franchise, however, is not worried about his decision at all.
CEO of CSK, Kasi Viswanathan, has told the Times of India in an interview that the 39-year-old can play for the IPL franchise as long as he wants. The former wicket-keeper has retired from International cricket only and can be seen next month playing for the Yellow Army. Viswanathan also revealed that the management is also planning to retain their skipper even after IPL 2021.
“He has quit international cricket only. He is going to play for CSK. We want him to play for us as long as he wants. In fact, we plan to retain him as a player after the 2021 IPL too,” he said.
Viswanathan also voiced his opinion about the speculation that Dhoni might retire from IPL as well if CSK wins the title this time. He hoped that Dhoni will not quit CSK as silently as he retired from the International circuit.
We don’t interfere with MS Dhoni when it comes to cricketing decisions: CSK CEO
“The decision to retire from international cricket was typical of Dhoni. But we don’t interfere with him when it comes to cricketing decisions. However, we certainly hope that he doesn’t make a decision like that and quit CSK,” he was quoted saying.
Dhoni’s decision surprised the whole cricket fraternity as he was practising for CSK. Nobody had any idea about the big decision. Viswanathan also expressed that nobody knew that Dhoni is going to retire during the first training session and owner N Srinivasan was the one who informed him.
Dhoni’s decision was quite laid down in the former captain’s own style. CSK’s CEO revealed how Dhoni still managed to hide his emotions and after telling him to the news.
He signed off by saying– “His decision completely took us by surprise but he showed no emotions. He was as cool and calm as ever. The Indian team and CSK have achieved success over the years under Dhoni’s captaincy because there was clarity in his thoughts. On Saturday, too, I could see the same clarity in his decision.”
