The Islamabad United led by their stand-in skipper JP Duminy clinched their second Pakistan Super League (PSL) title by winning the final match of the tournament against Peshawar Zalmi at the National Stadium, in Karachi. Islamabad United registered a spectacular victory by defeating the Zalmi franchise by successfully chasing down the target of 149 runs with 3 wickets in hand and with 19 balls remaining in the T20 match.

The Islamabad overseas New Zealand player Luke Ronchi once again played an explosive and blistering inning at the top to power the run chase for his PSL franchise, that guided them to an easy victory in the end.

We definitely received much amount of love from the Pakistanis: Duminy

South African batsman JP Duminy was appointed the skipper of the Islamabad team as their regular skipper Misbah ul Haq suffered a painful hairline fracture in his wrist during the league stages of the tournament. Thus, subsequently, Misbah was also forced to pull out from the rest of the Twenty20 league because of his injury.

After winning the final of the PSL 3, Duminy cited this moment as a proud honor to be given the opportunity to lead this team and also described the winning title as the most ‘memorable moment’ during the whole Pakistan trip. Both the eliminators and the important final match were held safely without any security hindrances in Pakistan, while the league matches and the qualifier took place in UAE.

“Proud of the love we received from the Pakistani people,” said Duminy on the support his team received during their stay in Pakistan as quoted by Business Recorder.

In the final match against Peshawar, the Islamabad team displayed a stunning all-round performance, which was laid by their bowlers in restricting the opposition for a decent score initially, after which Ronchi and other batters took their team past the finishing line successfully. Duminy also mentioned that all the players performed really well as it was a very big match for them against a quality team like Zalmi, who were the defending champions of the tournament.

“It was an unbelievable experience despite being under a lot of pressure,” the South African batsman added on the pressure on his PSL franchise for the final match.

“The boys performed well. [And everyone] played well in the whole tournament — be it foreigners or the young Pakistani boys,” concluded the stand-in Islamabad United captain.
