'We will get there someday' - Sourav Ganguly reacts on Indian women’s team's heartbreaking loss in T20 World Cup final
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly praised the women team’s journey in the tournament and said they will win the title one day.
India’s cricket supporters had another heartbreak as the women’s team led by Harmanpreet Kaur fell at the final hurdle of the T20 World Cup in Australia, losing to hosts by 85 runs in a one-sided final on Sunday. After remaining undefeated till the title clash, the Indian batswomen saw a poor day in the office as they crumbled against the same team they had beaten in the inaugural game by 17 runs. It was India’s second defeat in the final of a World Cup in a month as the country’s Under-19 team lost to Bangladesh in a thrilling final in South Africa in February.
Greetings poured in from all quarters for the Women in Blue who made their maiden final in a T20 World Cup this time. They were up against the Kangaroos who were playing their sixth World Cup final on the trot and won the fifth title on Women’s Day. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly also praised the women team’s journey in the tournament and said they will win the title one day. It may be mentioned here that the Indian women had lost the final of the 50-over World Cup to hosts England by just nine runs in 2017.
In a tweet, the 47-year-old Ganguly said, “Well done the Women’s team @bcci @JayShah .. Two back to back World Cup finals .. but we lost .. u we’re super .. we will get there someday .. love the team and players”
Sourav Ganguly himself lost a WC final against Australia in 2003
Ganguly is also among those who came the closest to win the world title but failed. On a similar March day in 2003, he captained India in the final of the 50-over World Cup against Australia but the day did not belong to the Men in Blue as they were thrashed by 125 runs by Ricky Ponting’s side in South Africa.
On Sunday, nothing went in favour of the Indian women. After Australia skipper Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to bat, the hosts put up a blazing performance with the bat to post a total of 184 for 4 in 20 overs. India never looked in control while chasing and lost half their side for 58 in the 12th over to concede the game. Wicketkeeper-batswoman Alyssa Healy slammed 75 off 39 balls to be judged as the player of the match.
