The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team is one of the most experienced teams in the ongoing IPL 2019. The MS Dhoni-led team, which won the IPL in 2018, was called the Granddad’s Army for having the most players over the age of 30 years. Imran Tahir at the age of 39 is the oldest player in the group, while 22-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad is the youngest of the lot.
However, the core of the Chennai based team is well over the age of 30 years and this means that the team members were the slowest on the field something that makes the CSK team leak runs in the field. The team management realises the same and the skipper MS Dhoni also admits but wants the player make it up with their experience.
Dhoni talks about making up for the deficits in the field
MS Dhoni knows that his team is one of the slowest on the field, but knows that their players can easily make up for it in the experience department they possess. “We are well covered in other areas. We will never be a great fielding side, but we can be a safe fielding side. We might bleed a few runs here and there, but as long as we use our experience, we’ll make it up with our batting and bowling,” Dhoni was quoted as saying by FirstPost.
Dhoni admitted that one cannot push his players, especially the core, too hard on the field, as it might result in an injury. “You don’t want the XI to push too hard and get injured. We haven’t done well at the death, so plenty of areas to work on. But still, it is a good victory,” he added.
Although most of the players are over 30 years old, they play a crucial role in the team’s win more often than not. While Imran Tahir is having the purple cap at the moment, Shane Watson‘s 44-run knock against the Delhi Capitals earned him the Man of the Match award on Tuesday.
