The supporters haven't been able to accept ICC's decision.
All is definitely not well in Bangladesh cricket. A lot of commotion has marred their cricket over the last few days. Nazmul Hasan Papon, the chief of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has been in the thick of things, giving press conferences. One of the cricketers, who have also grabbed the headline is Shakib Al Hasan. The veteran conducted a players’ strike at the national capital in Dhaka.
He along with a number of other cricketers from the country put forth a 11-point demand list to the BCB, which was later accepted by the board. Then, he got himself tangled into another controversy when he became the brand ambassador of Grameenphone, a telecom industry. The BCB didn’t take legal action against the Jessore-born, but asked him to answer to the show-cause notice.
The biggest blow was yet to come by then. October 29, 2019- the date turned out to be a massive one both for Shakib and cricket in Bangladesh. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has slapped the ace all-rounder with a suspension of two years, with one year of that suspended. It was after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code of Conduct.
Shakib Al Hasan can resume playing cricket next year
On three instances, the experienced cricketer failed to failed to disclose full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct to the ACU. Shakib chose to admit to the charges and agreed the sanction with the ICC in lieu of an Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing. He will be free to resume playing cricket on 29 October 2020.
If he can satisfy the conditions in respect of the suspended part of the sanction, he will be able to commence cricket next year. After the suspension, Shakib was distraught and he is now looking forward to working with the ICC ACU team to support their education programme and ensure young players don’t make the same mistake he ended up doing.
In the meantime, the fans in Bangladesh have gone absolutely bonkers. They haven’t yet been able to accept the fact that their favourite won’t be on the field for as long as a year. The supporters has taken a pledge to not watch the game and have started protesting in front of the BCB headquarters.
