Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles before joining Delhi Capitals as captain. However, Delhi had a poor run in the 2018 season, prompting Gambhir to voluntarily step down mid-season. Shreyas Iyer took over the captaincy thereafter.
Dinesh Karthik became KKR’s captain in IPL 2018, leading the team to the playoffs. KKR finished fifth in 2019, but after a poor start in 2020, Karthik stepped down and was replaced by Eoin Morgan. Under Morgan’s leadership, KKR reached the IPL 2021 final but lost to Chennai Super Kings.

David Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden IPL title in 2016 and had a successful run as captain. However, in 2021, he was removed from captaincy despite consistent performances. Kane Williamson replaced him, and Warner was later dropped from the playing XI. Ahead of the 2022 mega auction, Sunrisers did not retain him, and he went unsold initially.
In IPL 2022, MS Dhoni handed over the CSK captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja, making him only the second captain of the team since 2008. However, CSK struggled under Jadeja’s leadership, winning just 2 out of 8 matches. Dhoni resumed captaincy mid-season. Jadeja initially considered leaving CSK but was persuaded by Dhoni to stay. He continues to play for CSK.
In 2013, Ricky Ponting joined Mumbai Indians and was named captain after Sachin Tendulkar. However, due to poor form, he stepped down mid-season, and Rohit Sharma took over. Under Rohit's leadership, Mumbai won multiple titles. Ponting stayed on as coach until he stepped down in 2016.
