Smriti Mandhana is currently in West Indies scoring runs at will against the home side in the ongoing five-match T20I series. However, approximately 14,609 km away from where she is right now, Smriti is in the news for some weird reason and even she wouldn’t be aware of it. Her photoshopped image on Google is going viral at the moment and the fans are furious about the same.
Ever since she has scored an abundance of runs in the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2017, the fans have been in awe of her batting and most importantly, her smile. The social media also declared her the ‘national crush’. However, the current controversy has brought up by one of the Twitter users whose account is with the name Chethana.
She was looking up Smriti Mandhana online and accidentally spotted her photoshopped image. For reference, the user also shared a collage of the original and the edited picture of the press conference the cricketer attended once. In the original image, Smriti has been clicked without makeup but in the photoshopped image, she is seen wearing kajal and lipstick even as her complexion has also been altered to the lighter tone.
The Twitter user expressed severe disappointment over the beauty standards in the series of tweets in which she also elaborated her points.
Here are her tweets:
Was Googling Smriti Mandhana and came across this photoshopped image. Actual image on the right, for context.
How fucked up are beauty standards if a cricketer's photo in a press meet is being photoshopped to lighten her skin tone and add kajal and lipstick. pic.twitter.com/KKbmKyYf13

People saying – "oh she's still beautiful", that's not the point.
You're reinforcing what this stupid photoshopped image stands for.
The point of this is to show that even a Google image of an athlete has to be photoshopped to match some arbitrary standard of beauty….

… you saying "um don't understand the need for photoshop, she's still beautiful" = same emphasis on "beauty" that is the problem in the first place.

Smriti Mandhana makes a strong comeback
Meanwhile, after being ruled out of the home series against South Africa, Smriti Mandhana made a comeback to international cricket on the West Indies tour. She missed the first couple of ODIs but then played the deciding game and score a match-winning knock. The southpaw continued her form in the following T20I series as well and has formed a great opening pair with the teenager Shafali Verma.

What kind of a person would wake up and think "Ok I'm gonna take the picture of a cricket player and spend hours to put on some digital makeup on her….." https://t.co/oQgVAyku9P

This is ridiculous…. Though I am sure some of our male cricketers would also be asking magazine and publications to Photoshop their images https://t.co/9BHYeFPMd1

Ewww.
A) She's being spoken about in the context of her job.
B) She is gorgeous with or without photoshop.
C. When regular phones are being sold with inbuilt filters, every image (and our perception of how we photograph) is distorted. https://t.co/3nIqhcFtGh— PriyankaBhattacharya (@PriyankaDutt) November 12, 2019
This is disgusting. No other word for this.
