Football and cricket are two enormously different sports. They are so far apart that anyone making any connection between the two becomes subject to furious fall-outs with people. However, the one common thing between almost all sports perhaps is the personalities of the sports persons. Irrespective of their sport, the drive, the dream, and the passion is something that one takes away from the sport.
Lionel Messi and Virat Kohli are perhaps the best players in their respective sports at the moment. While it is understood that Messi gets better with age, Kohli just seems better each time he walks out to bat. However, there is a void in their respective careers at the moment. Although Kohli has won the World Cup in his first ever outing in 2011, he has come tantalizingly close to victory in the World T20 on several occasions. Moreover, defeat found itself back once again in his lap as the Sunrisers Hyderabad snatched a victory from the grasp of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the recently concluded IPL.
In the case of Lionel Messi, he has won perhaps every award possible at the club level. The 29-year old boasts of multiple Balon D’Or titles, multiple club, and UEFA accolades to his name. However, the void has seen him lose three international finals on the trot. These finals include the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa America and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This has seen Messi waltz his way into international football retirement.
Messi’s heart-broken speech after Argentina’s loss – “That’s it. It’s over for me with the national team. It’s not for me. That’s four finals. The decision has been made, I think so. [Winning] is what I wanted most. It didn’t come. I think that’s it. That’s how I feel now, what I think. It’s a great sadness. It hurts not to be a champion.”
