After all the expectations, Ruturaj Gaikwad made a dismal start to the IPL 2022 after being dismissed for a duck against the Kolkata Knight Riders. The right-hander edged one to the slips against the bowling of Umesh Yadav and Nitish Rana made no mistake in holding onto a superb catch that came really quick to him. CSK were sent on the backfoot straightaway after the downfall of Gaikwad and it was not the start the defending champions would have wanted.
It has to be noted Gaikwad was the Orange Cap holder in the previous edition of IPL 2021 and all eyes were on him coming into the tournament with the way he batted last year. The 25-year-old played three dot deliveries at the start and went after a wide one that was not in his reach as the outswinger did the trick in the end. Gaikwad never looked comfortable at the crease and failed to capitalise on a free hit as well.
Yadav had to be given a majority of the credit for the wicket, however, the Maharashtra lad should have been more committed in his shot. Gaikwad made his way into the Indian side on the back of his IPL performances and has played three T20 internationals already. With the T20 World Cup 2022 coming up this year, he would be wanting to use these chances to make his place permanent in the squad.
Earlier in the day, CSK won the toss and opted to bat at the Wankhede Stadium. This was the first game for Ravindra Jadeja as the captain of the franchise after MS Dhoni stepped down from the role last week. With Moeen Ali not available for the first game, CSK opted to play four overseas options in Devon Conway, Dwayne Bravo, Mitchell Santner and Adam Milne. Tushar Deshpande and Shivam Dube made their debut for CSK as well.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Gaikwad’s dismal show

Ruturaj Gaikwad started 2020 with a duck, ended 2021 with an 'Orange Cap' and starts 2022 with a duck again. He's removed by Umesh Yadav, who became the first bowler in history to start the IPL season with a no ball. #CSKvsKKR #TataIPL2022

Great start for KKR, Ruturaj chancing his arm, undone by extra bounce, caught well in the slips. Remember CSK without Faf, eho’s gone to RCB, and Moeen Ali, who’s yet to come for the tournament. Big test for Conway
