West Indies announce 13-player squad for India ODIs, Jason Holder returns
Anderson Phillip and Romario Shepherd are the only dropped players from the squad that faced Bangladesh.
West Indies have announced a 13-player squad for the three-match ODI series against visitors India, which gets underway on July 22. In order to strengthen the line-up, the selectors have recalled veteran all-rounder Jason Holder, who was rested for the Bangladesh series. Notably, the Nicholas Pooran-led side will have a point to prove in the series as they suffered a humiliating 0-3 whitewash in the recently-concluded home ODI series against Bangladesh.
The Men in Maroon looked utterly clueless against the Bangla Tigers and would like to learn from their mistakes. A lot will depend upon the duo of Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope, the captain and the vice-captain of the team. The likes of Rovman Powell and Jason Holder are the other players to watch out for.
Coming to the changes, Anderson Phillip and Romario Shepherd are the only dropped players from the squad that faced Bangladesh. While Shepherd isn’t in the squad, he will be with the team as a reserve player alongside spinner Hayden Walsh Jr. Meanwhile, Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) lead selector Desmond Haynes is confident of his team doing well after Holder’s return.
“As we all know Jason is one of the leading all-round cricketers in the world and we’re happy to have him back in the team. He will be refreshed, re-energized and ready to go and we can expect to see his brilliance on the field as well as meaningful contributions off the field as well,” said Desmond Haynes in an official statement.
“We had a very challenging three matches against Bangladesh in Guyana so we will be looking to rebound when we face India in the conditions in Trinidad. We have seen some growth among some players, but overall we need to regroup and play better against the Indians,” he added.
West Indies squad for India ODIs: Nicholas Pooran (Captain), Shai Hope (Vice Captain), Shamarh Brooks, Keacy Carty, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Rovman Powell, Jayden Seales
