West Indies replaces Sri Lanka as the no 1 T20I team

Sri Lanka was outclassed by New Zealand in all formats in the recently concluded series. The loss suffered at Eden Park in the second T20I has knocked the islanders off the top spot in ICC T20I rankings. West Indies now top the table ahead of Australia and Sri Lanka. After winning the series, New Zealand has climbed two places and is now ranked 6th.

World Champions Sri Lanka needed one win to retain T20 number 1 ranking. After being beaten fair and square in the Test and ODI series, the visitors were blanked 2-0 in the shortest format of the game. The first match witnessed a close finish while the second one was a one-sided contest in favour of the home team. NZ moved into the T20Is with more confidence as they are in right momentum after clinching Test series 2-0 and ODI series 3-1.

With 125 points the Lankans couldn’t get the win they needed to retain the numero uno spot. Under Dinesh Chandimal, the team failed to turn its fortunes and ended the tour on a disappointing note. It suffered a series whitewash joined the West Indies and Australia on 118 points. The Windies top the table ahead of Australia and Sri Lanka with the points being calculated beyond the decimal point.

England is the fourth ranked team followed by South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan. India languishes at number 8 and will look to climb the ladder by winning the T20I against Australia. Afghanistan and Bangladesh complete the top ten spots in the rankings.
