West Indies created history by winning the World T20 2016, their second title and with that became the one team to do so. England had the game in their hand until the 19th over, but a surprise assault on Ben Stokes by Carlos Braithwaite just stunned the Brits. Here are the player ratings of the victorious West Indies team for their performance in the final.
Chris Gayle – 3/10
Chris Gayle failed in yet another big game, making four runs. He was caught by Stokes off the bowling of Joe Root, who picked up 2 wickets in the only over he bowled. Gayle probably ends his T20I career with a World T20 title, since the next World T20 will be in 2020 in Australia.
Johnson Charles – 2/10:
Johnson Charles fell victim to Joe Root in the same over before Root accounted for Gayle. Charles made 1 run in 7 balls and was looking to break the shackles before Stokes took a nice catch off to send him back to the dugout.
Lendl Simmons – 1/10:
The hero of the semi-finals against India, Lendl Simmons was dismissed for a duck on the first ball in this match. He was out leg before to English pacer David Willey and could not reproduce the magic of his innings against India.
Dwayne Bravo – 7/10:
Dwayne Bravo truly performed as an all-rounder in the finals. He picked up 3 wickets for 37 runs in his 4 overs which included Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali for cheap scores. And when Samuels needed someone to give him company, Bravo steadied the ship for a while making 25 runs off 27 balls.
Darren Sammy – 5/10:
Darren Sammy didn’t do much in the match, bowling one over for 14 runs and making 2 runs while batting. But he did the best thing that could be done for the West Indies was winning the toss on the Kolkata pitch and decided to field first. His bowling changes were perfect and even though England came back into the game in last 4-5 overs, he gets his points for his leadership.
Marlon Samuels – 9/10:
Cometh the hour, cometh the man and man did Samuels own the final of the World T20 2016. He did an instant replay of his World T20 2012 final innings against Sri Lanka and despite wickets falling at the other hand; Samuels kept his cool and made sure West Indies was kept in the hunt till the last over possible.
Carlos Braithwaite – 9/10:
Carlos Braithwaite was the man who won West Indies the World T20 in an extreme pressure situation. Not only did he take 3 wickets for 23 runs with the ball, keeping the pressure on the English batsmen, he made 34 runs off just 10 balls which included the match winning four sixes off the first four balls of the 20th over from Ben Stokes. Braithwaite is surely one for the future.
Denesh Ramdin – 3/10:
Denesh Ramdin didn’t have much to do in the match apart from taking a catch of Moeen Ali off the bowling of Bravo and keeping the score sheet clean and keeping beautifully of both the spinners on a pitch which required keeping of the highest class.
Andre Russell – 5/10:
Andre Russell provided the early pressure by dismissing the dangerous Alex Hales for 1 run and then bowling his four overs for just 21 runs. Though he failed with the bat, this time, getting out for just 1 run, trying to hoick a Willey short ball to the midwicket boundary only to see the ball sail into the hands of Ben Stokes.
Samuel Badree – 8/10:
Samuel Badree made sure that England didn’t get the runs in the first 8 overs by giving away just 16 runs in his 4 over and picking the wicket of Jason Roy. He then removed the dangerous England captain Eoin Morgan and set up the game brilliantly for his team to capitalize on.
Sulieman Benn – 2.5/10:
Sulieman Benn failed to an extent in bowling in tandem with Badree and providing him support from the other end. He went for 40 runs in 3 overs in the finals, having been targeted by Joe Root and Jos Butler especially.
