West Indies v India, 4th ODI – West Indies Player Ratings
Holder's 5/27 broke the back of the Indian batting thereby scripting a memorable win against India.
West Indies strangled India to win the 4th ODI by 11 runs to induct life in an otherwise one-sided ODI series. Their batsmen could only manage to get 189 runs on the board but the bowlers struck fatal blows to eventually close out a tight game which gathered interest in the final 15 overs.
Since Dhoni batted till the 49th over, chances of an Indian win were very high till the Jharkhand batsman was out there. But the former skipper holed out in the deep leaving India with 14 to get in the last over. Dhoni was very cautious in his entire innings facing 114 balls for his 54 which had just a solitary boundary in the laborious knock. Rahane batted well scoring his fourth straight 50 plus score but couldn’t finish the job for his side as he fell in the 31st over for a fine 60. It was left to Dhoni to finish it for India as he found no ally in Jadhav, Hardik Pandya or Ravindra Jadeja. But the soon to be 36-year old took the chase to deep for his own liking and eventually had to play a bail-out shot which landed in the lap of the long-on fielder.
West Indies were very sedate during their own innings and crawled to just 189 for 9 in their 50 overs but their bowlers made it look like 250 as they bowled immaculate line and lengths to keep the Indian batting under check. It was skipper Jason Holder’s maiden ODI five-wicket haul which paved the way for the host’s win.
Here are the player ratings for the West Indies side for the 4th ODI:
Evin Lewis – 7.5/10
Lewis batted with a steady approach but ensured that the home side doesn’t give away any wicket to the new ball. Shami and Umesh bowled threatening lines but Lewis stuck it out. In hindsight, his 35 was worth a lot on a very slow Antigua pitch where the big boys from India struggled to get going.
Kyle Hope – 7.5/10
Playing in just his second international match, Kyle Hope showed maturity to bide his time when the going was tough. Though he would be kicking himself to flounder a good start for a nothing shot, Hope’s 35 was instrumental in West Indies getting off to a healthy start.
Shai Hope – 7/10
Hope has gotten off to a start in all three outings with the bat but will be very disappointed with getting just 25 runs against his name. He got out at the wrong time which prevented the home side from launching an attack in the last 10 overs. He held on to a one-handed grab off Jadhav’s inside edge apart from taking two cool and calm skiers off the bat of Kohli and Karthik.
Roston Chase -5/10
Chase fell to Kuldeep again. He misread a googly for the second game in a row to be dismissed bowled. He also got off to as start, 24 off 34, but could not take the innings ahead. Usually a very reliable bowler, Chase almost handed the game to India by conceding 16 runs in the 44th over. He will be disappointed with his effort with the bowling.
Jason Mohammad – 4/10
A lot has been spoken about Jason post his heroics against Pakistan when he led his side to an improbable win by scoring a brilliant 91* but the right-hander has struggled to get going in this series. He batted well to reach 20 but cut one straight to Jadeja fielding at point to give away the advantage of getting his eye in.
Jason Holder – 9.5/10
Holder secured figures of 5/27 to inspire his side to get back in the series. Holder got the big fish Virat Kohli to dent India’s chances early in the innings. He then bowled Pandya just when the Baroda boy threatened to take India home. Holder will remember this game for a very long while and deservingly won the Man of the Match award.
Rovman Powell – 1/10
Powell was surprisingly never used with the ball during India’s chase. He got a chance to shine with the ball but he could add just 2 runs against his name before getting out to Umesh Yadav. West Indies is looking at Powell more of a batsman who bowls and the 23-year old must deliver by scoring runs.
Ashley Nurse – 7.5/10
Nurse has enjoyed bowling in this series as he has been very economical. He picked the significant wicket of Rahane which opened the floodgates for the faster men. Nurse has been brilliant in tying down the opposition by bowling some nagging lines. His 1/29 today was a performance that he could be proud of.
Devendra Bishoo – 8/10
Bishoo bagged the wicket of Rahane and never let any batsman target him for easy runs. His staunch 15-run knock with the bat was vital in lifting the home side’s total over the 175-run mark. Bishoo’s contribution in the middle overs was absolutely sensational.
Alzzari Joseph – 7/10
Joseph struck the telling blows when he sent Dhawan back to the hut early and then removed Karthik to send India into damage control mode. His 2/46 was another instrumental contribution to the hosts’ win.
Kesrick Williams – 7/10
Williams kept Dhoni quiet for the entire length of the 35-year old’s innings. He mixed his slower balls and cutters brilliantly to ensure that India keeps on delaying the final push. In the end, Williams’ 1/24 applied the brakes on the much famed Indian batting line-up.
