Skipper Rohit Sharma smashed a half-century while Dinesh Karthik played a blitz innings of 41* off 19 balls with four fours and two maximums as India posted a huge total of 190/6 in 20 overs, subsequently winning the first of the five T20 internationals by a big margin of 68 runs at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba in Trinidad. The Indian bowlers dominated and kept taking wickets at regular intervals as the Caribbean side got restricted to 122/8 in their run-chase.
Talking about how the series opener unfolded, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to field first. Rohit led his side from the front as he amassed 64 off 44 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes. Suryakumar Yadav, who opened for the first time in T20Is, mustered 24 off 16. Shreyas Iyer bagged a duck while wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant scored 14. All-rounder Hardik Pandya didn’t get going as he got dismissed for a solitary run. Karthik remained unbeaten till the end to take his team to a massive total.
Chasing 191, openers Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks managed to score 15 and 20 runs, respectively. Jason Holder, who was promoted to number three, got out for a duck. Power-hitters Pooran and Rovman Powell failed to contribute big as they both got dismissed for below 20 runs. Shimron Hetmyer, who made a comeback into the side, also managed only 14 off 15. The West Indian chase never really got going as they faltered badly in their chase. Spin twins R Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi, and pacer Arshdeep Singh snared two scalps each as India sealed the deal in the opening encounter.
