Skipper Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik’s performances with the bat along with the bowlers’ show helped team India in winning the first of the five-match T20 international series against West Indies by 68 runs at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba in Trinidad. Karthik’s whirlwind knock of 41 off 19 took India’s total to 190/6, which proved to be more than enough for the hosts. The series now shifts to Warner Park in Basseterre in St.Kitts with the second match taking place on Monday, August 01, 2022.
Rohit kicked started the innings with fluent innings of 64 off 44 with the help of seven fours and two maximums. Experienced all-rounder Jason Holder went for plenty as he delivered an expensive spell of 1/50 in four overs. Alzarri Joseph, who made his T20I debut, also leaked runs as he ended up with figures of 2/46. The visitors posted their joint-highest total against the Men in Maroon in T20Is in West Indies.
Indian bowlers were up to the mark right from the start as they never allowed West Indies to get going in their pursuit of 191 runs target. The home side kept losing wickets regularly and got dominated by the bowling from the opposition. Arshdeep Singh, who played just his second game was impressive for his spell of 2/24.
Spinners R Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi took four wickets in total in between them and conceded just 48 runs in eight overs. 1-0 down in the series, Nicholas Pooran will look to make a quick turnaround for his side by delivering the goods in the second clash and leveling the series 1-1.
