Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant knock of 76 off 44 which included eight fours and four maximums overshadowed Kyle Mayers’s innings of 73 as India defeated West Indies by seven wickets at Warner Park to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 165, Suryakumar’s efforts helped India to seal the deal with ease in 19 overs, which also turned out to be the highest successful run-chase in T20Is at the venue.

Talking about how the clash unfolded, captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. Half-centurion from the last game Brandon King got dismissed for 20 by Hardik Pandya, his 50th victim in the format. Mayers looked in great touch as he registered his highest score of 73 off 50 with eight fours and four sixes. Skipper Pooran, Rovman Powell, and Shimron Hetmyer all chipped in with cameos of below 25 runs each as the hosts reached a total of 164/5 in 20 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the Indian bowlers with his spell of 2/35 in four overs.

The visitors suffered a blow in the run-chase when skipper Rohit got retired hurt on 11 due to a back spasm. Shreyas Iyer joined Suryakumar before he fell for 24 off 27. The former’s lean run extended as he has now amassed just 80 runs in his last seven outings. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten on 33 off 26 to guide his side to a comfortable victory. With this win, the Men in Blue have now taken the upper hand in the series with the action now moving to Florida for the final two matches. For his 76-run knock, Suryakumar grabbed the Player of the Match award.
