Shreyas Iyer struck a half-century while the spinners shared all the ten wickets in between them as India defeated West Indies by a massive margin of 88 runs in the fifth and the final T20I in Lauderhill in Florida to clinch the series 4-1. Iyer scored 64 off 40 which included eight fours and two maximums as the Men in Blue reached a big total of 188/7 in 20 overs. Ravi Bishnoi delivered his career-best spell of 4/16 with Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav picking up three wickets each.
Speaking about how the dead rubber encounter unfolded, Hardik Pandya who captained the side today in place of Rohit Sharma, won the toss and opted to bat first. Ishan Kishan couldn’t make the most of the opportunity that he got today as he went for just 11. Deepak Hooda batted at no. three and made an eye-catching 38 off 25 with the help of three sixes and two fours. Sanju Samson amassed 15 while Hardik’s quickfire innings of 28 off 16 took his side to a score of above 185.
Chasing 189, the West Indian top order got blown away by Axar Patel, who picked up the top three wickets. Jason holder, who opened the innings for the first time in T20Is bagged a duck with Shamarh Brooks and Devon Thomas scoring 13 and 10 respectively. Power-hitters Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell were disappointing yet again as they both got out for below ten. Shimron Hetmyer smacked a 35-ball 56 with five fours and four maximums before falling prey to Bishnoi. The hosts got bowled out cheaply for just 100 in 15.4 overs with all the wickets going in the bank of the Indian spinners.
This turned out to be the first instance where all wickets were taken by spin bowlers in T20I innings. With this victory, India completed their successful white-ball tour to the Caribbean and the USA with series wins in both ODIs and T20Is. For his early wickets and a spell of 3/15 (3), Axar Patel bagged the Player of the Match award. Arshdeep Singh, who took seven wickets in five matches at an economy rate of just 6.58, won the Player of the Series award.
