West Indies and Sri Lanka took on each other in the first T20I on March 3. On a tricky wicket at Coolidge Cricket Ground, Antigua, hosts won the toss and elected to field first. Opener Niroshan Dickwella played an important knock of 29-ball 33 runs to keep Sri Lanka in a good position. Pathum Nissanka’s 34-ball 39-run knock also helped Sri Lanka in putting up a total of 131 runs in 20 overs.
Coming to the chase, Caribbean openers Evin Lewis and Lendl Simmons gave them an explosive with a 52-run opening partnership. The comeback man Chris Gayle couldn’t do much as he went out for a golden duck. Akila Dananjaya was the wrecker-in-chief with a hat-trick. He picked Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle, and Nicholas Pooran in three consecutive deliveries.
However, what highlighted the whole match is Kieron Pollard’s six sixes in an over. Pollard, who came to bat at No. 5, handled the proceedings in style. In the sixth over that was bowled by Dananjaya, Pollard recreated Yuvraj Singh‘s act. He became the second batsman in T20I cricket to achieve this rare feat.
Here’s how it happened:
Ball 1: Pollard sends Dananjaya for a six over long-on. He was quick to pick the length ball to smack it for a maximum.
Ball 2: Dananjaya tries this very full but Pollard, who is very strong in this very area, lofts it straight onto the sightscreen.
Ball 3: This was fired too full and Pollard was prompt enough to put this over long-off.
Ball 4: This goes over deep mid-wicket. Pollard quickly spots the wrong-un and was quick enough to send it for a maximum.
Ball 5: Dananjaya, this time, tries leg-break and Pollard puts it over long-on.
Ball 6: Dananjaya puts this one on the pads, but Pollard knows where to smack this as he smashes it over mid-wicket and bows down in style.
