West Indies vs Sri Lanka: Niroshan Dickwella drops 'K', sports 'Dicwella' on his jersey

Niroshan Dickwella played an important knock in the ongoing first Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka in Antigua. His knock of 96 ensured that the Sri Lankan side posted a target of 375 in front of the West Indies team. However, during the innings, there was a strange change observed in Dickwella’s jersey. 

The wicketkeeper-batsman was spotted wearing a jersey with a different name than the usual one. His jersey during his knock was observed to have a Dickwella spelled as ‘Dicwella.’ The reason for changing the name on the jersey is still unknown. Nothing was revealed regarding the reason behind dropping ‘K’ from the name of the player. 

Nevertheless, the left-handed batsman gave one more reason to remember the knock which was played in Sri Lanka’s second innings of the first Test. Unfortunately, even after playing a superb knock, the 27-year-old missed out on his maiden Test century, something which he has been deprived of on many occasions during his career so far. 

Niroshan Dickwella misses Test century again

This was also the second time that he was dismissed in the 90s. Earlier this year, he was dismissed for 92 against England in the home Test series. He now has 17 fifties without a century. This has also helped him to enter the record books by becoming the player with most fifties in Test cricket without scoring a century. 

In the ongoing Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka, the visitors came back from a 102-run first-inning deficit to post a second innings total which could prove to be a match-winning effort. In the first innings, Sri Lanka had only made 169, in reply to which West Indies scored 271 runs. 

Lahiru Thirimanne’s 76 and Oshada Fernando’s 91 gave them a brilliant start as they first knocked the deficit down. Dhananjaya de Silva scored a well-made fifty, but the partnership which made them a firm favourite to win the Test was between Dickwella and debutant Pathum Nissanka.

Their partnership yielded 179 runs as Nissanka got his maiden ton, becoming only the fourth Sri Lankan to score a century on Test debut. At stumps on day four, chasing 375, West Indies were at 34 for 1 after 20 overs. They still need 341 runs to win the Test match on the final day with nine wickets to spare.
