‘What a redemption’ – Virender Sehwag lauds Rahul Tewatia after RR’s win over KXIP in Sharjah
Tewatia's heroics helped the Royals snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
The Sharjah Cricket Stadium was a witness to a thrilling encounter on Sunday, September 27 in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) put forth an absolute spectacle and kept the audience at the edge of their seats throughout the 39.3 overs that took place. In the end, the Royals won by four wickets with three balls to spare.
After being put in to bat first, KXIP posted a mammoth 223 in their 20 overs. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal laid the platform with a partnership of 183 runs for the opening wicket off a mere 99 balls. The Punjab skipper was subdued, but Agarwal took on the bowling without nurturing any inhibition. The latter got to his fifty off 26 balls and then accomplished his maiden IPL ton off 45 deliveries.
His knock was laced with 10 fours and seven sixes. Cameos from Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell propelled the Punjab-based franchise in the death overs. In the run-chase, RR lost Jos Buttler early, but Steve Smith and Sanju Samson steadied the ship with an 81-run stand for the second wicket. Even as Smith contributed with 50 runs, Samson churned out a swashbuckling 42-ball 85.
Rahul Tewatia makes hay
However, the knock of the day came from none other than Rahul Tewatia, who was promoted up the order to number four. The move seemed to have backfired as he found it tough to pick even singles in his first 19 balls or so. But in the 18th over, he turned his fortunes around and smashed Sheldon Cottrell for 30 runs. In the end, he managed 53 runs off 31 balls with seven sixes to his name.
In the meantime, Virender Sehwag, the former Indian cricketer, lauded Tewatia for his stupendous knock. The veteran said that cricket is a sport, filled with uncertainties. He reckoned that cricket is similar to life with fluctuations in fortunes from time to time.
He took to Instagram and wrote, “Tewatia mein Mata aa gayi. What a redemption. Such is cricket and such is life, changes within minutes.” RR also recorded the highest ever run-chase in the history of the IPL.
