Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has revealed that batter Shubman Gill was furious with himself after getting out in the final Test match of the 2020-21 series against Australia at the Gabba. Gill was dismissed for 91 by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon in the second innings while chasing a target of 328.

Pant said that he had discussed with Gill to go for a win and not a draw. But once the opener was dismissed by Lyon, he went back to the pavilion furious and was cursing himself, said Pant. The wicketkeeper-batter, in the end, had to console the 22-year-old, saying that he had batted well.

“Gill and I had discussed that we wanted to win the match and not just draw it,” said Pant, on the docu-series ‘Bandon Mein Tha Dum’. Gill was hitting the pull shot, cut shot. I was feeling happy because we had discussed it. In my mind, I had only one thought that we have to win. When Gill got out, he was furious after he came back. He was shouting, ‘What have I done?’ and was cursing himself,” said Pant.

I told Shubman Gill ‘don’t worry, you have batted well’: Rishabh Pant

The Brisbane Test match is considered to be one of the most memorable games for Indian fans as the visitors completed a chase of 328 runs on the final day in the hostile Gabba territory, a venue where Australia had dominated the visiting teams for years. Pant, who remained unbeaten till the end of the day, told Gill “don’t worry, you have batted well” to console the opener.

Gill, who opened the innings, got out when India had 132 runs on board in the 48th over. It was a wide ball outside off-stump by Lyon that drew a drive off the right-hand batter, which caught a thick outside edge. It ballooned off the bat and was neatly caught by Steve Smith at slip. The chase was well set up by the opener at the top and a Player-of-the-Match performance of 89* off 138 balls by Pant, scripted a famous victory for India. With this win, India also clinched the historic series 2-1.
