Manish Pandey has found the going tough in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since last season. Though he scored runs, his strike-rate was always under the question. He mustered 292 runs in 8 innings last year and 425 runs in 16 innings in IPL 2020. But his strike-rate of 127.62 and 123.72 in the two editions respectively came under the scanner and hence, Sunrisers Hyderabad released him ahead of the mega auction.
New franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured his services for INR 4.6 crore in the auction for the ongoing season. But Manish Pandey is yet to deliver as per his reputation. He has been sent in to bat at three or four in the three matches so far. But the Karnataka cricketer hasn’t scored runs at all.
In two matches out of three he batted, Manish had a great chance to score big with LSG losing early wickets. But he threw his wicket away. His scores this season so far read, 11, 5 and 6 with the recent most being the first instance when he reached the double-figures.
Manish Pandey threw his wicket away after hitting a six
Interestingly, Manish Pandey looked in good touch in the middle after coming in to bat at four against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday (April 4). He smacked a four and a six off Romario Shepherd in the 5th over of the innings and had already scored enough runs in the over.’
But off the fifth ball of the over, he walked towards the bowler to smack a harmless short of a length delivery straight into the hands of Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was standing at mid-on. Manish Pandey had thrown it away yet again and the chances could be running out soon for him now with a hattrick of failures this season.
The 32-year-old batter is extremely talented but hasn’t just converted the potential on the big stage. He has also gone down the pecking order when it comes to selection in the Indian team. To have any chance of making a comeback, Manish Pandey has to perform in the IPL.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Extremely disappointed with MANISH PANDEY he was playing well & he’s a much better batsman than this. Can’t keep throwing your wicket away every game👎#SRHvsLSG #IPL2022

Bowling Washington Sundar in powerplay was a brilliant ploy especially with Rahul and QdK's tryst with off-spinners. As of Manish Pandey, it was reckless from him. #SRHvLSG

Manish Pandey had played similar kind of irresponsible shot in SRH vs DC match, where SRH were 2 down already (2020, Qualifier 2), What a terrible batter he is! #LSGVSSRH
