Defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders are set to lock horns with Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first match of the 2021 CPL. The Knights have retained Kieron Pollard as their skipper and rightly so because the team remained unbeaten last season.
He has been an integral part of TKR since 2019. In the last four seasons, the Knights have won the title three times and it shows the level of dominance they have had over opponents.
Going into the upcoming season, the Knights won’t be having the services of veteran Dwayne Bravo, who has moved ahead to St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The Warriors, on the other hand, have played a number of finals only to finish second.
Last season, they bowed out after losing the semi-final. Nicholas Pooran is in charge of the team and he has a massive task at hand. The Warriors have an experienced squad at their disposal going into the opener.
Playing combinations
Guyana Amazon Warriors
Brandon King and Chandrapaul Hemraj have opened for the team since 2019 and they have the relevant experience. Hetmyer, Hafeez and Malik form the core of the middle order. In the bowling department, Naveen-ul-Haq is amongst the wickets and his role will be critical. Imran Tahir has been a genuine wicket-taker over the years and he has to bring forth all his experience.
Predicted XI
Brandon King, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Nicholas Pooran (C and WK), Naveen-ul-Haq, Romario Shepherd, Imran Tahir, Kevin Sinclair, Waqar Salamkheil
Bench– Gudakesh Motie, Nial Smith, Anthony Bramble, Odean Smith, Ashmead Nedd
Trinbago Knight Riders
Tim Seifert hasn’t played a lot for the Knight Riders. But keeping in mind his recent form, it won’t be easy to bench him. Simmons and Narine should open the batting with Seifert at No.3. Colin Munro, Darren Bravo and skipper Pollard have played loads of games and TKR will depend heavily on them. Jayden Seales deserves a game after how he performed in the Test series against Pakistan.
Predicted XI
Lendl Simmons, Sunil Narine, Tim Seifert, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Tion Webster, Isuru Udana, Akeal Hosein/Khary Pierre, Jayden Seales, Ravi Rampaul/Ali Khan
Bench– Denesh Ramdin, Akeal Hosein/Khary Pierre, Ravi Rampaul/Ali Khan, Leonardo Julien, Anderson Phillip, Yasir Shah
