Jos Buttler will not be a happy man after what transpired in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kings XI Punjab match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Monday, March 25. Buttler was playing beautifully in the Royals’ chase of 185 runs against KXIP and had added 78 runs with Rahane for the first wicket.
Everything was going fine when in the 13th over, Ravi Ashwin ran Buttler out by ‘Mankading’ the Englishman. Buttler was found out of his ground, just as Ashwin came into his bowling stride. Ashwin flicked the bails off in a flash and Buttler was given out by the third umpire.
Not the first time Mandkading happened with Jos Buttler
The Mankad moment created a huge controversy but it isn’t the first time Buttler had was subjected to such an incident. During an ODI match between Sri Lanka and England in England in 2016, Lankan spinner Sachithra Senanayake caught Buttler taking undue advantage of the crease and was leaving the crease much before then he should have.
Senanayake issued Buttler a warning in front of the umpire, but when Buttler didn’t get the message, ran him out by Mankading him. Lankan captain Angelo Mathews was asked by umpires whether he was receding the appeal, but he didn’t and Buttler was sent on his merry way.
“It is obviously batsman error,” Buttler had said in 2016. “If you walk out of your ground and someone wants to do it, it is in the Laws of the game. It is all part of the game.”
Here is the video of Buttler getting Mankaded by Senanayake in 2016:
After being bashed on social media for his unsportsmanlike conduct, Ashwin said that it was an ‘instinctive decision’ which was taken as per the rules of the game. Ashwin had previously Mankaded Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne in 2012 during the ODI tri-series in Australia. However, then India skipper Virender Sehwag had withdrawn the appeal and prevented the controversy from blowing up.
