The ACC Women’s T20 Championship makes its return this year after a break of nine long years. The tournament will begin on 17th June 2022, with the finals to be played on 25th June. The Malaysian Cricket Association is the host of this year’s tournament. Ten nations will be participating in the competition in hopes of securing the top Prize.
The participating countries are UAE, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Nepal, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Bahrain, Singapore, and Bhutan. These 10 teams have been divided into two groups of five teams each. Each team meet once against the other four teams in the group, and the top two teams from each group after the single round-robin group stage will qualify for the semi-finals.
Asian Cricket Council’s president Jay Shah has placed an added incentive on the participative teams in this year’s tournament, as he announced that the top two best-performing nations i.e the two finalists, will be granted a passage to the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup, where they will join India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Thailand, scheduled to be played later this year in Bangladesh. Shah also expressed his happiness on the return to the competition after nine years.
“The last time the ACC Women’s T20 Championship was in 2013. The revival is long overdue, and this, I believe, will set the tone for us to move faster towards the development of women’s pathway programs in Asia. The development of women’s cricket programs is an integral component that must be pushed forward,” said Shah in a statement.
He added that “with this tournament, in addition to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Thailand, two more countries will be awarded the opportunity to make it to the Asia Cup. This is a first in the history of the ACC Women’s T20 Championship, where, the top two qualifying teams will make it to the Women’s T20 Asia Cup.”
Women’s cricket has been on a resurgence after the introduction of the T20 format to the game, and this tournament provides a perfect platform for some of the lesser-known names to showcase their talent on a global stage.
