After being defeated in the Test and T20I series, Bangladesh managed to bring some smiles to their fans’ faces by winning the first ODI against the home team West Indies on July 10 (Sunday). Spinner Mehidy Hasan was excellent with the ball as he was adjudged player of the match for his excellent bowling performance.
At the Providence Stadium in Guyana, the visitors won the toss and opted to have a bowl first. Bangladesh got some immediate success as they got rid of batter Shai Hope during the second over of the match. Shamarh Brooks (33) and Kyle Mayers (10) ensured that the Men in Maroon did not lose any more wickets during the first ten overs.
However, some spirited bowling performances from the visitors ensured that the West Indies team continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. At first, opener Mayers was dismissed by Mehidy, followed by Brandon King (8) and then Brooks. Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd tried to bring back West Indies to the contest but they could not complete the job as Powell contributed just nine runs, while Shepherd crossed the double-digit mark scoring 15 runs.
Match got reduced to 41 overs due to rain
The rain also played its part as the match got reduced to 41 overs per innings. But, that did not change West Indies’ fortune with the bat as the Men in Maroon could only make 147/9 in their allotted 41 overs. Mehidy Hasan was impressive after taking three wickets and giving away just 36 runs in his nine-over quota. Apart from him, Shoriful Islam also took four wickets for his side.
In reply, Bangladesh also started poorly after losing opener Litton Das quickly, but skipper Tamim Iqbal (33) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (37) played some crucial knocks for their team. After Shanto and Tamim got out, Mahmudullah (41*) and Nurul Hasan (20*) stitched a valuable partnership for their team and chased down the total very easily in the end. For West Indies, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie and Nicholas Pooran scalped one wicket each.

Absolutely fine with Nasum Ahmed making ODI debut but cannot understand why Anamul Haque Bijoy who made history in list A by scoring 1138 runs last season (which is also the highest ever) not getting picked today. Mind boggling! #WIvBAN pic.twitter.com/UEmyIEErBF
