If you rely on Wikipedia to source all your information there is a serious need to rethink. As the pages are open for edits, it is often that we see unverified and a lot of times incorrect information posted on the free encyclopaedia. Something similar happened today as the Wiki page for Women’s World Cup already listed Team India as the winner and England as the runners-up of the 2017 edition of the tournament whereas the final is yet to be played.
The Indian Women’s team beat defending champions Australia in the second semi-final of the Women’s World Cup 2017 to barge into the final where hosts England await them for the summit clash at the Lord’s on Sunday, July 23. They weren’t expected to come thus far in the tournament given that Mithali Raj & Co. had to make their way through the qualifiers to seal a spot in the World Cup in the first place.
Facing a strong Australian line-up that had already defeated them once in the tournament the odds were against India at Derby last night. But a stupendous knock from Harmanpreet Kaur changed the dynamics of the match and her 171* didn’t just propel the Indian Women to a total of 281/4 in 42 overs but also gave them the momentum to win the battle.
Coming out to bowl the Indians who had a mixed time in the WWC thus far putting up amazing and faltering shows were at their best when it mattered the most. The Aussies were expected to come hard given the tall total they were chasing but the opening bowlers Shika Pandey and Jhulan Goswami gave them early blows and the Kangaroos never quite got going.
Though Elyse Villani, Ellyse Perry and Alex Blackwell tried their best but couldn’t do enough to get their team over the lines as the Women in Blue won the game by 36 runs to qualify for their second WWC final under Mithali after 2005.
