Will be difficult for Kumble's successor to replicate his success: Virender Sehwag

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag believes that it will be very difficult to fill the big boots of Anil Kumble for the next coach of the Indian cricket team. Sehwag feels that Kumble did a fantastic job as the head of the national side in the last one year. Kumble had taken over as the head coach of the Indian team back in 2016. Under his coaching stint, the team went on to remain unbeaten in Test series.

India’s only defeat in the 17 Tests that they played under Kumble’s coaching was against Australia. India convincingly beat West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, and Australia in Test matches. In addition to those, the men in blue registered ODI series wins against New Zealand and England.

They also won the T20I series against England earlier this year. Lately, the team made it to the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. It comes as no surprise why Virender Sehwag believes that the successor of Kumble will find it tough to match the success Kumble had with the team.

“I never played under him as a coach but he supported me as a senior player in my playing days. He was my senior, my captain and helped me come. I don’t know him as a coach but his performances in last one year as a coach, it will be a difficult job for his successor to replicate his success. It will be difficult for anyone to fit into his boots,” Virender Sehwag quoted to UCWeb We-Media Blogger – Padampati Sharma.

Kumble is unmatched

Interestingly, Sehwag himself is in contention to be the next coach of the Indian team. He added that he cannot say anything about the coaching abilities of Kumble. But as a player and the captain of the national side, Kumble was unmatched.

“I cannot comment on his coaching style but as a player or captain, no one else can perform better than him,” Sehwag remarked.
