Will be a tough call to skip either Champions Trophy or IPL: Anurag Thakur

President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Anurag Thakur has gone on to reveal the difficult call the Board would have to make regarding the Indian team’s participation in the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy. The Indians are the reigning champions in the Champions Trophy by virtue of the fact that they won the tournament all those years ago in 2013.

However, with the IPL and the Champions Trophy coinciding without the recommended 15-day gap, the BCCI may take the decision of giving the Champions Trophy a miss altogether. Anurag Thakur made a statement regarding the same.

“I don’t know whether India will be able to play the Champions Trophy or not, if you go by the Lodha Committee report [suggestion of Lodha committee’s suggestion of keeping a 15-day gap between IPL and international cricket] you have to pick either of the two. Either you have to play the IPL or the Champion’s Trophy next year. BCCI have to take a call on that,” Thakur said.

Speaking about the main issue of the Indian Premier League, Thakur went on to add that it would be highly improbable to pack up the IPL with the BCCI standing to lose a few hundred crores of rupees in the process. As recommended by the Lodha committee, the 15-day gap would not be possible in the current international schedule.

“If you look at the overall IPL calendar then the IPL would not be possible that way. Are you going to lose hundreds of crores of rupees? India cricket will stand to lose if you wind up the IPL because of the International calendars. A 15-day window is not possible as of today if you have both the IPL and the Test calendar to go on,” he said.
