For the first time in 10 years, Team India will play a four-Test series against the West Indies. The last time, they played a four-match Test series in West Indies was in 2006, where the visitors went on to win the series 1-0. The upcoming tour to West Indies will be the first Test series outside sub-continent for Virat Kohli as full-time captain.

The 27-year-old Indian Test skipper has led India in one Test against Australia, right after MS Dhoni’s retirement and in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the sub-continent. Most recently, he skippered the team against South Africa at home. The Indian supporters will be eager to see how Virat Kohli the skipper fares with his overseas Test record.

It’s a little-known fact that no Indian side has managed to win more than one Test in West Indies.

Right since 1952/53, India managed to win three Test series in the West Indies. In 1970/71, Ajit Wadekar-led India 1-0 in a 5-Test series. In 2006, Rahul Dravid led India to a 1-0 win in four-match series, so did MS Dhoni & Co. in 2011.

In 2002, the Sourav Ganguly’s India lost the five-match series 2-1. In 1996, Sachin Tendulkar’s team fought hard but lost 1-0 in the five-match series.

Virat Kohli now has the best chance to win more than one Test and grab the series from West Indies. It is also the first assignment for Anil Kumble’s as coach of the Indian team. India will play their first Test starting July 21.
