Wimbledon and ICC had funny tweet exchange as cricket and tennis title clashes intensified in London
The brilliance of the historic encounters in both the sporting events spread like a wildfire and their respective apex bodies didn't miss to have a good view.
July 14, 2019, will go down in history as a golden day for sports, especially for the people of the United Kingdom. It was on this day that two epic matches were played on its soil – one in cricket and another in tennis – and both gave the supporters tremendous reasons to celebrate. Although the two games are characteristically different for cricket is a team game and tennis an individual – but the amount of excitement that they generated on Sunday made it an evergreen one for any sports lover.
It was just within a few kilometres in London that two title clashes took place. While hosts England took on New Zealand in the final of the cricket World Cup at the Lord’s Stadium, Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer locked horns with Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic in the final of the prestigious Wimbledon. While the cricket match saw two ties – one in the scheduled 100 overs and another in the super over, the tennis match continued to beat all records to become the longest singles final.
Both title clashes seemed to go on and on
At Lord’s, New Zealand batted first and scored 241 for 8 and then bowled brilliantly to restrict England for the same score. The match then went into the super over and there, England batted first to make 15 and the Black Caps made the equal score. But England went on to capture the cup since they had hit more boundaries than their opponents.
In the tennis match, the marathon rivalry saw Djokovic winning 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 13-12(7-3) over 37-year-old Federer who was in the hunt for his ninth title. It was the Serb’s second consecutive Wimbledon title and the fifth overall.
As the two matches became more and more intense, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Wimbledon exchanged light moments with the funny tweet exchanges over the two epic sporting events turned out to be.
In an example of perfect humour, Wimbledon asked ICC how the latter was coping with the end as both the games seemed to be going into eternity. To that, the apex cricket body replied in an equally funny way, saying things were a bit hectic at their end and they would be back. It then added that it was a crazy day for the sports lovers in London and also asked what would people do the next day after such exhausting entertainment.
