Windies vs England, 2019: 3rd T20I – Statistical Highlights

Windies’ dismal performances with the bat continued in the 3-match T20I series against England as they were bundled out for just 71 in the final game of the series. David Willey struck early on with a 4-wicket haul during the powerplay. No player scored more than 11 runs for the hosts who last only 13 overs. England struck 16 runs in their first over of the chase but lost two wickets and required 10.3 overs to complete a series whitewash.

A poor show with the bat for the Windies:

276 – The 276 runs aggregated by the Windies in this series are the fewest by any team with three or more innings in a bilateral T20I series. Sri Lanka’s 314 runs against India in 2016 are the previous lowest. (Excluding series with rain-affected matches)

28 – Number of wickets England have claimed in this series; the joint-most in a 3-match T20I series. Australia against England in 2014 bagged 28 wickets during the home T20I series. Pakistan also claimed 28 wickets against Sri Lanka and Australia in the series played in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

A series of 4-wicket hauls:

3 – Tom Curran, Chris Jordan and David Willey claimed 4-wicket hauls in each game of this T20I series. This is the first instance of a team had three 4-wicket hauls in a bilateral T20I series. Overall, this is only the 4th bilateral T20I series to witness three 4-wicket hauls.

In T20I tournament, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have recorded this feat that too twice. Pakistan had three players taking 4-fers in 2007 and 2009 WT20s. Sri Lanka had three 4-fers in the T20 Canada 2008 and WT20 2012. Ajantha Mendis had two 4-wicket hauls apiece in both those tournaments.

A spell to remember for Willey:

4/7 – David Willey’s bowling figures of 4/7 are the 2nd best for England in the T20I format. Chris Jordan recorded the best figures for England in the previous game only where he picked 4/6 from his two overs.

4/7 – Willey’s 4/7 are the 3rd best bowling figures by a left-arm pacer in T20Is. Mustafizur Rahman (5/22) and James Faulkner (5/27) bagged 5-wicket hauls during the 2016 WT20 on consecutive days.

A slow chase:

10.3 – Number of overs England needed to chase down the target of 72; the joint 2nd most number of overs needed for any team to chase down a target of 72 or lower.

Ireland needed 19.1 overs for chasing down 68 against Kenya in the 2008 Belfast T20I. A day after Ireland’s struggle at the same venue, Canada needed 10.3 overs for chasing down the target of 71.
