India extended their lead to 260 runs by the end of the 3rd day in the first Test match against the Windies in Antigua. The hosts were bundled out for 222 in their first innings and handed a 75-run lead in the first innings. India were three down for 81 runs on the board in the 2nd essay when the vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane joined his skipper Virat Kohli. Rahane got to his 2nd fifty of the game with a boundary of Miguel Cummins where Kohli reached his milestone with a boundary through a pull shot also off Cummins.

All the statistical highlights from yet another day dominated by India in the Antigua Test match:

The record partnership:

8 – Number of century stands between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane for the 4th wicket in Test cricket; the most by an Indian pair. They went past the seven 100-run partnerships by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly pair.

9 – Kohli-Rahane pair have nine century stands between them in Test cricket; all for the 4th and lower wicket. Only Tendulkar-Ganguly (10) pair have shared more century stands than Kohli-Rahane pair in Test cricket for 4th and lower wicket. Sachin Tendulkar shared nine 100-run partnerships with Mohammad Azharuddin and VVS Laxman for 4th and lower wicket in the longer format.

Cummins bats long without scoring:

95 – Miguel Cummins batted 95 minutes before he was dismissed for a duck. This is the 2nd longest batted duck in Test cricket behind Geoff Allott’s duck in 101 minutes against South Africa in the 1999 Auckland Test.

45 – Cummins was dismissed on the 45th ball he faced; the most balls faced duck for the Windies in Test cricket and stands 5th in the overall list. Windies’ Keith Arthurton bagged a 40-ball duck in the 1995 Lord’s Test against England.

The Rahane redemption:

4 – Only the 4th time Ajinkya Rahane has scored the fifties in both innings of a Test match. The last of the previous three instances came back in 2015 during the Delhi Test match against South Africa. Interestingly, all those four instances came in four different nations – Durban 2013, Southampton 2014, Delhi 2015 and now in Antigua.

Not converting the starts:

2 – Only the 2nd time all the top 8 batsmen of Windies got into double-digits but none of them went past fifty. The other such instance was during the 2nd innings of the 1987 Christchurch Test against New Zealand. Overall, this is only the 8th instance of each of top 8 in a Test inning getting dismissed for scores between 10 and 49.

The middle-order rescue:

8 – No.5 to No.8 batsmen of both India and Windies crossed 20 in their respective first innings. This is only the 4th instance of No.5 to No.8 batsmen scoring 20+ runs in the first two innings of a Test match. England-New Zealand Leeds Test in 2004, the 2009 Sri Lanka-Pakistan Test in Galle and the 2011 Chattogram Test match between the hosts and Windies also witnessed the same.

A short lead:

75 – The first-innings lead of 75 runs for India is their lowest when they batted first against Windies in the last 8 years. India batted first four more times in this span against the Windies and took a first-innings lead of 478, 323, 128 and 468. India took 200+ first-innings lead in five out of 8 Tests since 2013 against the Windies.
