After the washed-off game in Guyana, India put forth a sterling show at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. Virat Kohli and Co won the rain-shortened game by 59 runs (DLS Method). It was captain, who led from the front with a sparkling century, his 42nd in ODI cricket. Kohli’s show was followed up by a clinical performance by the bowlers, who shot the opposition out for 210 in only 42 overs.

For the home team, it hasn’t been a happy campaign by any stretch of the imagination. Following the 3-0 whitewash in the 20-over format, the Windies are now on the threshold of another series loss. Their bowling wasn’t quite penetrative in the second match. The third ODI is scheduled to be played on August 14 at the Sabina Park in Jamaica and all the hosts can do is avoid a series loss.

Pitch and Conditions

The venue has been a witness to 36 completed ODIs out of which only 14 were won by the team, batting first. Hence, going by history, chasing should be the way forward. The hosts may not want to chase though after their poor show last time. The pitch has been an average scoring one as in the last eight games from 2011, the average score has been around the 250 mark.

Team Combinations

Windies

The Caribbean team is likely to bring in Keemo Paul for Oshane Thomas, who looked completely out of sorts in the previous encounter. Evin Lewis has been a massive positive, especially after his poor run of form in the T20Is. The southpaw is currently the hosts’ leading run-scorer in the series. Chris Gayle has taken his time early on, but the veteran hasn’t been able to show his class and caliber.

Shai Hope’s bad form in ODIs continued. Shimron Hetmyer hasn’t got going either. Roston Chase and skipper need to contribute as well. Carlos Brathwaite’s death bowling has improved leaps and bounds and the onus will again be on him. But he has to show a little more consistency with the bat in hand. Sheldon Cottrell has arguably been the Windies’ standout bowler ever since the World Cup.

India

Despite not winning the series yet, the Men in Blue may make a couple of changes. Navdeep Saini was excellent in the T20Is and he may get his maiden ODI cap. There’s a chance that Mohammed Shami will be rested. Yuzvendra Chahal is yet to get a game in the series and Kuldeep Yadav may make way for the leg-spinner. Shikhar Dhawan would desperately be looking to find some rhythm.

It goes without saying that captain Kohli returned to his very best after a string of fifty-plus scores in the World Cup. Rohit Sharma will wish to make amends after playing the rash stroke off Chase in the last game. It’s also an opportunity for Shreyas Iyer to show that he can put up the big scores on a regular basis. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been India’s best bowler with experience up his sleeve.
