Windies vs India: Shreyas Iyer wants to be a flexible option for the Men in Blue
Iyer made his comeback in the India team for the West Indies tour.
For a long time now, India have been looking for questions to their middle-order problems. Even in the World Cup, the chinks in their armour were exposed. The number-four conundrum kept haunting them. After their World Cup exit, India are currently in the West Indies where the team is taking part in a three-match ODI series. For the fixtures, Shreyas Iyer was called upon in the squad.
Iyer had to warm the benches in the T20I series that preceded the 50-over format. However, he was included for the opening ODI at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to bat as the game was called off after 13 overs of the Windies innings.
Nevertheless, Iyer isn’t quite bothered about batting at No. 4. Rather he wishes to be flexible in the lineup and grab the opportunity whenever it comes. The Mumbai batsman gave his insight prior to the second ODI on Sunday at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
I am not thinking about batting only at No. 4
“We have got no idea. It’s totally the management’s decision. I can’t go and say that I want to bat at No. 4 and they would put me in that spot. It’s not like that,” Iyer was quoted as saying in the pre-match press conference.
“It’s going to be a vacant spot and they are going to definitely try and give chances to all the players in that position. Currently, no one is convinced with that position,” the youngster mentioned.
“Personally, I am not thinking about batting only at No.4. I want to be someone who is very flexible batting at any number or if you go into any situation you should be able to grab that opportunity and make the best use of it,” he added.
Iyer made his international debut way back in December 2017 but hasn’t been able to cement his spot. Earlier Iyer said that going in and out of the national team doesn’t set the right pattern for a player. He also stated that he had dreamt of playing the 2019 World Cup and is now looking forward to his upcoming cricketing assignments, donning the national jersey.
